The Mind - Body Connection

Mind, Body, and Mood: My Take on Mental Health This May

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect, reset, and recommit to habits that nurture our emotional well-being. Mental health is often treated as something separate from our physical state, but the two are deeply connected—and one of the most powerful bridges between them is movement.

We know the science: regular physical activity reduces stress, eases anxiety, and lifts mood. Whether it’s a brisk walk on your break, a yoga flow after a long shift, or dancing in your kitchen to your favorite playlist—moving your body does wonders for your mind. It boosts endorphins, regulates cortisol, and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself.

But let’s talk about something less often discussed: how you feel in your skin—literally.

At Valmasi, we believe that wellness starts with comfort and confidence. What you wear, especially during long shifts or high-pressure days, can influence your mood and self-perception. There’s truth in the old saying: when you look good, you feel good

And let’s be honest—there are days when the weight is heavy.

We all have moments when we feel overwhelmed, when the pressure builds and our shoulders feel like they're carrying the weight of the world. In those moments, it’s easy to overlook our progress or downplay our strength. But here’s the truth: standing tall—even in the face of stress—is an act of resilience.

Be proud of your accomplishments, yes—but also your failures. Every win, every misstep, every hard day is a step forward in your growth. Confidence doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from showing up, again and again, no matter how heavy the load feels.

Even something as simple as how you dress can become a part of this practice. It’s about choosing tools—like movement, mindfulness, and yes, clothing—that help you reclaim your power.

I have felt this just starting this business of scrubs for curvy women. There are some successes but there are also many failures. It would have been easy to retire from medicine and just sit around and do yoga, however I remind myself that life is a challenge. Everyday we wake up to face something new and learn from it. When we stop learning, we stop living. On those days when you feel your lowest, pick yourself up, stand tall and put on clothing that you feel good wearing. See how you feel, especially after you get a compliment.

Healthcare professionals spend countless hours on their feet, caring for others but when you wear scrubs that are thoughtfully designed—soft, flattering, breathable—you stand taller. You feel more put together. That small boost of confidence matters.

Feeling your best mentally and emotionally isn't about grand gestures. It’s about daily choices: lacing up your sneakers for a walk, drinking enough water, calling a friend, or choosing scrubs that don’t just function, but empower.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we invite you to honor your mind and body by making space for the things that support both. That could be 10 minutes of stretching before a shift, journaling during your lunch break, or finally upgrading your scrubs to something that matches your inner resilience and outer brilliance.
