Curvy Isn’t One Measurement: Why We Are Redefining Medical Scrubs for Women

As a physician, I’ve spent years wearing scrubs through 12-hour shifts, busy clinics, and unpredictable schedules. Like many women in healthcare, I found myself constantly adjusting my uniform.

For a long time, I thought the problem was me. Maybe I chose the wrong size? Maybe I didn't know how to shop for my shape?

Eventually, I realized the truth: The problem isn’t the body—it’s the design. Standard medical scrubs are often built on straight-size proportions and simply "scaled up," failing to account for how bodies actually vary. At Valmasi, we believe "curvy" isn't a single measurement; it’s about how a garment respects your entire silhouette.

The Problem with the "Size Up" Solution

When scrub tops feel tight across the chest or restrictive through the shoulders, the universal advice is to "size up." But for women with a fuller bust, sizing up creates a new set of problems:

  • Shoulder seams that droop past the natural line.

  • A waistline that becomes boxy and loose.

  • An overall fit that looks unprofessional and feels cumbersome.

You’ve solved the restriction in the chest, but you’ve sacrificed the integrity of the fit everywhere else.

Why Finding the Best Scrubs for Hourglass Figures is a Struggle

For those of us with a defined waist and fuller hips, the "waist-to-hip ratio" is where most scrub pants fail. If the pants fit your hips, the waistband is often dangerously loose, leading to the "scrub crawl"—that endless cycle of pulling up your pants and tightening drawstrings all day.

We’ve accepted this as a "normal" part of the job. We shouldn't. Whether you are looking for athletic fit scrubs or scrubs for wide hips, you shouldn't have to choose between a restricted stride and a sliding waistband.

The Valmasi Difference: Design with Intention

When I founded Valmasi, I didn't want to just "improve" scrubs; I wanted to re-engineer them. We took a different approach to the design process:

  1. Fuller Bust Support: Designing tops that accommodate curves without distorting the rest of the garment.

  2. Waist-to-Hip Ratio: Accounting for the actual curves of a woman’s lower body so the pants stay in place during movement.

  3. Structured Movement: Using fabric and tailoring that supports a physician’s range of motion without gapping or pulling.

Confidence Starts with a Better Fit

When your scrubs are designed with intention, something shifts. You stop thinking about your clothes because they are finally doing their job—allowing you to move freely and feel confident.

Fit shouldn't feel like a "workaround." It should reflect the reality of the women wearing them.
